ABOUT THE EXHIBIT:
NHAA and Portsmouth Historical Society collaboration on "The Matter of Memory" exhibition is a competitive opportunity to submit work addressing contemporary perspectives on memory and remembrance. The first floor of this exhibition will display a wide variety of historical art and artifacts that illustrate how some Portsmouth people have reconstructed their own visions of the past. We invite local and regional artists to complement this exhibition—held on the Historical Society second floor gallery—by considering the poignant questions below, following the art submission guidelines as outlined, and submitting artwork that is a contemporary response to memory and remembrance.
ABOUT OUR JURORS:
EMMA STRATTON joined Portsmouth Historical Society as the Executive Director in June 2022. She also served as the Executive Director of the American Independence Museum in Exeter, NH from 2017 to 2022. She has worked in nearly every museum department from curatorial to publications at numerous institutions including Historic New England and the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Renwick Gallery in Washington, DC. Her passion is community engagement and sparking an interest in history with the public. She has her bachelor’s degree in American Studies and History from Connecticut College and her master’s degree in Museum Studies from The George Washington University.
GERALD W. R. WARD is the curator of the Portsmouth Historical Society and editor of the Portsmouth Marine Society Press. He is also the Katharine Lane Weems Senior Curator of American Decorative Arts and Sculpture Emeritus at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and has contributed to many publications on American art and material culture as an author or editor. He is currently a Visiting Lecturer at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston and is serving his sixth term as a State Representative in New Hampshire. Ward is a graduate of Harvard College and received his PhD from Boston University.
MEREDITH AFFLECK is the Exhibitions Manager of the Portsmouth Historical Society. She took a non-traditional path to museum work, spending ten years as an administrator in the construction and architecture industry, with a two-year hiatus as an administrator for a software development firm in Paris. Her passion for art and history led her to transition to the museum world where she relishes the ability to use her visual art skills and love of learning to shape a curator's vision into an engaging experience for visitors. Meredith received her bachelor's degree in studio art from Hamilton College and a certificate in museum studies from Tufts University.
